Art Making and Meaning:

Understanding through Questions

Art Enrichment for Adults

The Art Making and Meaning DVD is a straight-forward introduction to art that adults will find personally rewarding. The companion interactive CD helps them check their understanding, apply what they learn to the everyday visual world, and increase awareness of art inquiry strategies that they can use to explore any artwork or artifact. Art Making and Meaning helps them build a repertoire of questions to enrich their explorations of local, regional, national, or international sites, such as historical centers, architectural sites, and art museums, and folk art centers.

Parents, grandparents, and other adults can consult “Elementary Art Classes” for recommendations of questions appropriate for younger learners that they might use as starting points to initiate intergenerational exploration with children or adolescents, for example, on a trip to a local art museum.

Professionals and volunteers responsible for enrichment activities in community centers, museums, or senior centers will find Art Making and Meaning to be a flexible and engaging resource to stimulate discussion among adults.  The broad questions offer opportunities for adults from diverse cultural backgrounds and generations to share their own visual experiences, not only with art but also with meaningful cultural or family heirlooms or treasures.
