Art Making and Meaning is a broad, flexible structure for organizing art instruction.  Seeing artists as real people who make art for a living reinforces studio instruction. Sharply focused questions addressed in intimate detail by articulate and personable artists motivate lively, open-ended, wide-ranging student participation in beginning art and art appreciation classes. The modular structure of Art Making and Meaning useful in helping pre-service teachers plan inquiry-based art lessons. The inquiry approach presented in Art Making and Meaning can be extended to the other arts and across the curriculum, most readily to language arts and social studies.
